The Goshen Orchestras value different performance settings for our students. We love our large curricular ensembles. In December and January, our GJH and GHS orchestras spend a significant amount of time working in student-selected groups for our annual Chamber Unit. All students will have a chamber group. Most of these chamber groups choose to register for the ISSMA Solo & Ensemble Event which will take place at Elkhart High School on February 6th. Students may also perform individually at the event by registering for a solo.
We start organizing the ensembles for this event in October. Solo & Ensemble registration takes place in November. (Solos $18 / Ensembles $10) Specific times assigned and released by ISSMA in early January. Total time commitment for one event is about an hour sometime between 7:30 AM and 4:00 PM.
Students receive written feedback from a quality adjudicator and earn medals that correspond to their performance rating. There are 5 difficulty levels for registration. Group V is typically for first-time performers. Group I is the most advanced level (usually advanced high school students), having to register a piece off of a required list. Students receiving a Gold Rating at the February 6th event are eligible for the prestigious State Solo & Ensemble event taking place in Indianapolis on February 27th.
